This study is offered with the intention of presenting the social representations about the teacher's of Physical Education social function. Eighty people was selected of randomic form, in the area of Praça Seca, neighborhood of Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro. The sample is constituted of 35% of people in the age group between 15 and 25 years, 28,7% between 26 and 40 years, 26,2% between 41 and 60 years and 10% above 60 years. It was just accomplished a question to the interviewees: for you, what does a teacher of Physical Education make? Five main categories was identified. In the nucleus of the representation it finds the categories Health Quality of Life with 26,8% and Physical Activity with 21,5%. In the first periphery it meets the category to Teach Sports with 18,3%. In the distant periphery, the categories to Give Class and Socialization both with 9,7%. We concluded that the representations are organized around the idea that the teacher of Physical Education is a professional of health area with a conceptual base that has in the biosciences its anchor.

Este estudo é oferecido com a intenção de apresentar as representações sociais sobre a função social do professor de Educação Física. Oitenta pessoas foram selecionadas, randomicamente, na região de Praça Seca, bairro de Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro. A amostra constitui-se de 35% de pessoas na faixa etária entre 15 e 25 anos, 28,7% entre 26 e 40 anos, 26,2% entre 41 e 60 anos e 10% acima de 60 anos. Foi realizada apenas uma pergunta aos entrevistados, a saber: para você, o que um professor de Educação Física faz? Cinco categorias principais foram identificadas. No núcleo da representação encontram as categorias Saúde/Qualidade de Vida com 26,8% e Atividade Física com 21,5%. Na primeira periferia encontra-se a categoria Ensinar Esportes com 18,3%. Na periferia distante encontram-se as categorias Dar Aula e Sociabilizar ambas com 9,7%. Concluímos que as representações se organizam em torno da idéia de que o professor de Educação Física é um profissional da área da saúde, com um arcabouço conceitual que tem nas biociências a sua âncora.
